Private Charles Henry Glenn

Charles was the eldest son of Henry and Clara Glenn, born in 1887 in Long Itchington and the family moved to Southam when he was a toddler. He started working life as a baker but like most of his younger brothers he left the town for employment and by his mid-twenties he was a gas fitter living in Bedworth. Charles Glenn was brought up a father in the metal trade, for Henry Glenn had a whitesmith business in Southam, so it is unsurprising Charles and several brothers went into the plumbing and allied trades.

The only available record of Charles’ war service is in the Birmingham Employers 1914-1918 Roll of Honour. His employers, Grice, Grice and Son, Ltd., an established firm, employed skilled tradesmen in the tubes industry.

In 1913 Charles married Alice B. Taylor in Bedworth Parish church and a year later their daughter Katherine Iris was born. After the war Charles did well by 1939 becoming Gas Works Manager in Bedworth. He died in 1959 in Nuneaton.
